custom cms benefitsIf you are thinking of having a new website, the decision is no longer whether to have a content management system, but which one to choose.

There are plenty of free open source content management systems available now, either for download or available from your hosting provider via an easy installation wizard, but website administration custom designed around your business and inline with your needs has several advantages that standard off the shelf systems don’t offer.

The Benefits of a Custom Content Management System

  • a custom system allows easier integration with back office systems and business processes
  • it can save you time on administration, no need to click thru mulitple menus, have the most important functions on the dashboard
  • automate your business processes stage by stage by developing the cms
  • unique website layout, so your designer can go town and all the important elements will still be editable via the administration area, no sticking to established templates
  • often it’s easier to code something from scratch than to search through pages of plugins and add-ons that don’t work correctly when you find them
  • flexibility, out of the box systems are limited in what they can do
  • custom systems also allow add ons, modules and upgrades, a custom system built with Ruby on Rails (our chosen development platform) can be easily developed and upgraded over time
  • a custom system is more focused on your needs, with concise unbloated code
  • security, all other things being equal, commonly used systems with open source code are more likely to be attacked, with already established gateways for breaching
  • and finally, a cms allows you to update your website, whether it’s new products, special offers, price changes or text amends, you can login anytime to post updates, a custom cms will simply make that task easier, by allowing us to design and optimise the dashboard and the update process for you.

Difficulties in Customising an Existing Cms

Free open source content management systems will usually come with a template. The standard template is unlikely to fit your business, so the template can be amended and changed using plugins, control panels, css, html and the like. Sometimes, only a few changes are required and the website can be up and finished quickly, this is the case particularly for simple websites and flexible customers. However, in our experience, clients often want to have custom designs which stand out and custom features and functionality which aren’t necessarily easy to implement with an off the shelf system.

In other words, it’s often easier, quicker and more direct to build a custom cms based on the requirement, than to change an existing system to fit the requirement.

Amending existing features and modules inside existing systems can take more time and it can have unexpected consequences on other functionality.

How Much is a Custom Content Management System?

Prices of our custom content management systems start at £500, and for a larger system with back end integration, user and email communications management and other functionality, prices can stretch to over £5000.

Prices include free hosting for one year and training. Contact us today and let’s talk about your idea, the estimated costs and the next steps.

WordPress Installation £400

This blog was originally created as a test run of WordPress. It’s worked well, it’s easy to add new posts and gives us a lot of capabilities, after choosing an existing template, adding a few plugins and editing the css a little, we stuck with what was given. If you are flexible and there is a template which suits your business, we also provide WordPress installation including setup, free hosting for one year and training starting at £400.

Notes.

If you’d like more information, see this interesting discussion and article on a coding competion, designed to answer which type of cms is best? The article includes a discussion on how to make the call on whether a client’s needs are best suited by a CMS, and whether the job needs a custom build, worth reading.

HostingRails.com Reverse DNS Problems

HostingRails.com offer some very good hosting packages at excellent rates, but unfortunately their technical and support team seems to be challenged by Reverse DNS issues.
Reverse DNS is sometimes used by email servers to verify that an email is being sent from a real address, if the reverse DNS doesn’t match up with the correct domain name / ip address, the server assumes that the email is spam and rejects it.

Reverse DNS Email Error – An Example
www.polandtrips.co.uk is hosted on the HostingRails.com server.
When sending emails from somebody@polandtrips.co.uk, some of the emails bounce and we get the following message from the Mail Deliver System: The message has not yet been delivered to some@emailaddress.com, Delay reason: SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM: : host smtp1a.netintelligence.com [62.128.193.98]: 451 4.1.8 Possibly forged hostname for 74.63.12.156

Why is the Email Rejected?
We aren’t exactly sure and still looking into this issue, but …
polandtrips.co.uk is hosted at 74.63.12.156,
reverse dns ptr for 74.63.12.156 = finney.hostingrails.com
but the DNS A record for finney.hostingrails.com is 74.63.12.189, possibly that’s the source of the problem, the fact that those IP addresses don’t match up.

Response from HostingRails.com
We have sent multiple support tickets regarding this issue. At the beginning of April they wrote, “The reverse dns is not something we can change… In any case we are upgrading/moving everyone to new servers in the next few weeks so this should stop being an issue when that happens.”
22.04 they wrote that a ticket had been submitted to the DNS team to further investigate the matter, but we didn’t hear back from the DNS team.
30.04 the web server was down for a few hours : / apparently they were switching servers.
19.05 they are saying that the VPS (virtual private server) is different from shared hosting and that’s why the reverse DNS isn’t working.
20.05 HostingRails.com have confirmed that they do not offer reverse DNS services on the VPS. However, they have offered us the prospect that it may be working soon, another migration to new VPS software apparently next week! Fingers crossed, watch this space!

After a good few years and a number of reincarnations, our online tshirt shop has finally been put live at www.wickedtshirts.co.uk offering original unusual tshirt designs, genuine fair trade tshirts. At launch we have just 27 designs available in three categories of tshirt, tattoo tshirts, fruit tshirts and asymetric tshirts (whatever that means).tattoo tshirts
The response has been muted, of course some of the designs are liked when we have asked people, but without any whauuu, we’ve had no response from web users and still waiting for our first sale, but traffic has risen from next to nothing to an estimated 200+ visitors this month. I’m still not sure on the design, would like to make some changes (actual tshirt icons along the bottom), navigation isn’t obviously intuitive and we should do some photo shoots showing the tshirts in action.
We aren’t running Wicked Tshirts as a business yet, it’s more an experiment to illustrate how we can build interesting, functional and effective websites. Wicked Tshirts uses our photo gallery solution and plugs into online payment so it’s easy to use for displaying products and selling them.
Apart from the website interface, we need to get some better tshirts done, I’m thinking some mismatch colour patches with elements of gold and silver, calling it colour kitsch, something completely unusual and different, but it’s massive market out there, hundreds of established online tshirt shops already in the game.

Thinking in Education

One would think that thinking in education is something that goes without saying, but of course there are different approaches to thinking and learning about how we think and using tools to help us think is a whole field of science in itself. Kestrel Education are a consultancy offering training, support and guidance to enable schools to build a culture that supports quality thinking and independent learning. The website was designed in cooperation with another designer and built with a content management system to allow an administrator to easily edit content and add new workshops, training events and locations.

Kestrel offer a ground breaking approach to teaching thinking tools and strategies to students.Visit the website to find out more about thinking skills.

open golf accommodationAs well as building websites for clients, we also have a series of our own brand websites. Late 2008 we bought a number of domains and clients from another design agency which was closing down. One of the brands they had was Open Golf Accommodation, a website with information about the Open Golf Championships and related hotel and accommodation options.

Golf Accommodation Website

www.opengolfaccommodation.co.uk provides us with a great mix, both golf and accommodation are popular keywords which can generate high value traffic and that gives us the option to sell ad space, publish advertisers articles and swap links with related websites.

When we took over the site it was a mish mash of html and frontpage, with outdated content and poor layout. To give us a flexible platform from which to develop the website we put together a standard content management system using Open Source Ruby on Rails, now we can easily add and edit new pages, tweak the navigation and include keywords and meta tags at the same time.

Do you like golf? Either way, take a look at the website and let us know what you think!

One month after the launch of our Photo Gallery solution, we have some positive results, one gallery sold, over 700 visitors in the first month, over 20 back links generated, Google Page Rank = 3 and a new order form and online payment facility introduced.

Following launch we spent a lot of time contacting photography related websites to request links, that gave us some initial traffic, we have over 20 back links linking to our website, thanks to which our Google page rank shot up from 0 to 3 in the space of a few weeks. That in turn has generated traffic from Google search.

During September we contacted over 400 photographers at ecademy.com and received a lot of positive responses, the main concern from potential customers was the lack of an online sales facility. That’s been fixed, Photo Gallery now has an online shopping facility, the administrator can create products, such as a print, poster, digital file, jigsaw etc.) and associate particular photographs with those products.

One Photo Gallery was sold and completed within two weeks for Workshop No.5, a stained glass window artisan wishing to present his collection of unique decorative mirrors, his new website is available at: http://www.workshopno5.co.uk

Online Promotion – The Next Phase
We will be spending more time on back link generation and email marketing through social networking websites such as ecademy.com

In addition we plan to advertise in a national magazine aimed at photographers, if anyone has any ideas on where is good to publish, please let us know.

Online Promotion Campaign Summary
Following the launch of www.photo-gallery-website.co.uk at the beginning of September 2008, our online promotion campaign produced good results:

  • Our Google Page Rank = 3
  • Over 700 visitors in the first month, almost half of them from Google search.
  • Over 20 back links created linking to our website.
  • One Photo Gallery sold and completed for Workshop No.5, a stained glass window artisan wishing to present his collection of unique decorative mirrors.

If you’d like us to promote your website online, please get in touch, visit www.rubberdragon.com for more details. If you have a photo related website we’d be happy to exchange links, please let us know!
